Bay Closures
After a hard economic summer we have had numerous bay closures that started in October 2009. This has led to very hard times finacially for about 1200 oystermen and thier families. We have contacted many officials, as well as crisis organisations with not much help being sent into Franklin County. There has been several families that have already lost thier homes and more mounting up and even more that have had thier lights cut off. If anyone can assist us in these disasterous times please contact Taunya James at 850-615-1391 or email to taunya@fcswa.com.
New Board New Start for the FCSWA
The Franklin County Seafood Workers Association, Inc. is proud to present their newly elected officers.
President Taunya James has been a working oysterman with her husband Joseph for seven years. She was previously the Treasurer for the FCSWA. Taunya worked for the Apalachicola Riverkeeper for two years and has remained involved with environmental concerns. She is a Master Naturalist and believes in preserving our natural resources. Taunya believes in education as a tool for protection and conservation/preservation of our watershed, estuary, river system, and most importantly Apalachicola Bay Area. Taunya is responsive to the idea of obtaining seeding oysters for replanting the bay in many different areas which would give work to interested seafood workers. She is extremely interested in the shelling program while working with the Dept. of Natural Resources. She has been part of the oyster relaying teams to move oysters to a more productive area and intends to promote this to a greater extent this year if possible.
1st Vice President Billy Dalton is a working oysterman and incumbent Vice President. Billy joined the ACF Stakeholders and attended his first meeting last month to show our warrior status as oystermen. He has been diligently working for all the members of the Seafood Workers Association because his greatest concern is making progress in the seafood industry and making it possible for us to remain a working seafood community.
2nd Vice President Shawn Shattuck is a life long oysterman of the Apalachicola Bay. He is interested in the shelling and relay program now in place and is going to work on making it a better program for the future. He is going to work with the DNR to find harder bottoms so the oysters are not dumped in mud where they sink and die.
Treasurer Karen Sanders grew up around oysters her mother shucked her father was an oysterman and her stepfather was an oysterman. She started shucking at the age of 15 and bought her first oyster license in 1993. She is an oysterman with a passion for the betterment of the seafood industry. She is excited about her position with the FCSWA and intends to help make our mission statement a reality. She has contributed many good ideas for fundraising, grant proposals, environmental issues and work programs for seafood workers in times of crisis.
Secretary Heather Maxwell is a new mom that is married to an oysterman and is no newcomer to the seafood industry. Her family has been seafood workers for generations. Heathers great grandfather Capt. Woodruff Butler was the 1st person to receive an oyster license. Her grandfather and grandmother are oystermen as well as her father and mother. So she is extremely interested in preserving the history and heritage of the oyster industry.
We would like to thank you for this opportunity to serve as your representatives.
